Tremendous years for volunteers

Avio Aero people dedicated over two thousand hours to volunteering since 2014, including projects in the poorest countries of the world that are still getting their constant commitment.

The Solidarity Christmas Market, the latest of the company’s volunteering activities which traditionally closes the year for Avio Aero, has just ended. Just like every year, many associations have been represented in each plant enabling our employees to buy Christmas gifts with a twofold effect of making a welcome gift while, at the same time, supporting projects launched by non-profit associations.

Colleagues from Brindisi have also joined the initiative “Give Christmas at Christmas” launched by the children's ward of Perrino Hospital in Brindisi: they have organized a charity collection with the aim of bringing a smile to the young patients there.

Corporate Voluntary Work - projects through which the company encourages, supports or organizes the active participation of its employees in the life of the local community or in support of non-profit organizations based in the territory - has always played an important role for GE as a whole and this has also been true for Avio Aero since its introduction in 2014.

Since then we have carried out more than 100 solidarity projects with local communities, provided support for the education and development of new generations, enhancement of cultural heritage and environmental protection and awareness, actively involving our employees.

Since then we have carried out more than 100 solidarity projects with local communities, provided support for the education and development of new generations, enhancement of cultural heritage and environmental protection and awareness, actively involving our employees.

AIRC, AIL, AISM, A.I.D.O., AirDown, Caritas, Casa Oz, Casa UGI, Croce Rossa Italiana, Fondazione Ricerca Fibrosi Cistica, Legambiente and Paideia are just some of the organizations we have worked with and continue to work with. In recent years, we have fully understood and embraced the potential of volunteering, which undoubtedly promotes inclusion and integration. This is because volunteers’ work helps to motivate, strengthen individuals’ sense of belonging and enrich the corporate culture through the acquisition of intercultural and transversal skills, so-called “soft skills”.

This is, for example, the story of the project by Alessandro Bandini, an engineer on Avio Aero’s OMLP (Operations Management Leadership Program); we started to talk about the project in May and it ties in perfectly with this principle. In the meantime, Alessandro's project is close to completion.

Due to ongoing protests and the recent escalation of violence and social unrest, the school building project in Nicaragua has been redirected to Haiti. Last October, Alessandro and the OMLP team spent an entire week in the community of Savanne Henry, a small village in the southern region of Haiti.

Haiti ranks 212th in the world by GDP per capita and is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, with primary school enrolment below 85% and a 25% illiteracy rate among children. The school they started building will be completed in 2 months and children in Savanne Henry will finally be able to attend classes and build a better future for themselves and their families with their own hands.

We end this great year of volunteering together with a sense of fulfilment and a smile, while we look forward to new possibilities and opportunities for solidarity in 2019.
